#30SecondBible: 1 John

A Series Of Stark Contrasts

By Jon Marlow

1 John is a letter to the Christians the elderly apostle calls his ‘little children’. As he thinks about his own death, he worries about their faith, and presents them with a series of stark contrasts: Those who walk in the light and those who walk in the darkness. Those who love God and those who love the World. Those for are for Jesus and those who are anti-Christ. Above all, we see in this letter a genuine affection and concern that mirrors God’s own love for us. A greater love that drives out fear and offers us Christ.

  1. What would you say to someone if you were worried about their faith?
  2. What other stark contrasts would you add to list offered in 1 John?

In The Flesh

By Jon Marlow

The Bible says that we’re body, mind and spirit - but sometimes it feels like we’re being told our bodies don’t matter, or are something to be ashamed of. In contrast, John writes about Jesus saying - “That …which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched”. Jesus’ followers had reached out their hands and found warm flesh, a body that eats, talks, laughs, loves, weeps and bleeds like we do. The good news of 1 John is that in Jesus we have someone who is with us, in the flesh.

  1. Where do people hear the message that their body is something to be ashamed of?
  2. How does the affirmation of Jesus' body affect the way your ink about your own body?
