#30SecondBible: 3 John
Whoever Does Good
By Matt Richie
In the letter of Third John a church leader who calls himself “The Elder” writes to his friend Gaius. He praises Gaius for the way he has shown hospitality to those who have visited Gaius’ faith community. The Elder knows that hospitality isn’t always easy. He knows that there are some in Gaius’ community who have turned away these strangers. So to make his point clear, he offers this simple truth: “Whoever does good is from God; whoever does evil has not (even) seen God.”
- How do you show hospitality to others? How have you experienced hospitality from others?
- "Whoever does good is from God." What does this statement mean to you?
Profound Acts Of Love
By Matt Richie
Third John reminds us that profound acts of love can be hidden within simple gestures of hospitality, a kind of hospitality that is despirately needed in a culture that cultivates fear and rejection of outsiders based on their ethnicity or religion. And so, may you come to see this God whose welcoming embrace reaches all people. May you find ways to extend that hospitality to the outsiders in your community. And may you find life and hope and meaning in the faces of the strangers that pass your way.
- In what ways does our culture cultivate fear and rejection of outsiders?
- How have you experienced a God "whose welcoming embrace reaches all people?"
