Jaime Clark-Soles

Rev. Dr. Jaime Clark-Soles is Professor of New Testament at Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University. She received her B.A. from Stetson University where she focused on both Philosophy and Russian Studies.  She earned her M.Div. from Yale Divinity School and her Ph.D. in New Testament from Yale University.  Her particular areas of expertise and publication include:

• the Johannine literature (the Gospel of John; 1, 2, and 3 John; and Revelation)
• Evil, Suffering, Death, and Afterlife
• Disability Studies and the Bible
• Women in the Bible
• Immersion trips to Israel and Palestine

She is the author of numerous books and essays. Her books include Reading John for Dear Life: A Spiritual Walk with the Fourth Gospel (2016), Engaging the Word: The New Testament and the Christian Believer (WJK, 2010); Death and the Afterlife in the New Testament (T&T Clark, 2006); and Scripture Cannot Be Broken: The Social Function of the Use of Scripture in the Fourth Gospel (Brill, 2003). She serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Religion, Disability & Health. Her essay on “Disability and the Johannine Literature” will appear in the book Disability and the Bible: A Commentary (Baylor University Press, 2017).  She is the New Testament editor of the new CEB Women’s Bible and currently she is completing a book entitled Women in the Bible for the Interpretation commentary series. 

Dr. Clark-Soles serves on the editorial board of the journal Disability and Religion as well as the journal Teaching in Theology and Religion, which is associated with the Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning in Religion and Theology (http://www.wabashcenter.wabash.edu). She is a member of the “Ethics and Biblical Interpretation” Steering Committee of the Society of Biblical Literature, the professional guild of her field.

Dr. Clark-Soles is an Altshuler Distinguished Teaching Professor and the recipient of a Ford Senior Research Fellowship. She is a member of the 2016-2017 cohort of the Christian Leadership Initiative, which meets at the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem (https://hartman.org.il). The program, in part, equips participants to do reasoned, collaborative, interfaith/interreligious work in a religiously pluralistic world.

Dr. Clark-Soles enjoys speaking widely and writing for both academic and popular audiences. She has contributed articles to preaching resources both in print and online (including Feasting on the Word, Feasting on the Gospels, and workingpreacher.org), and she serves on the board of the Center for Preaching Excellence (https://blog.smu.edu/pcpe/). Putting current events in conversation with biblical texts, she contributes regularly to ON Scripture - The Bible (http://www.odysseynetworks.org/on-scripture-the-bible).
